The interest was very high on
the side event organised jointly by INFORSE and WECF. There
were more people interested to hear NGOs from Africa and
Asia than the relatively large room could seat. The side
event took a point of view which obviously many other events
did not focus on.
The media coverage
was also exceptional: The Earth Negotiations Bulletin
covered it its daily printed edition as well as in its web
edition.
At the event, about 150 people learned how NGOs in three parts of Africa,
in India, in Nepal, and in Caucasus are reducing poverty with local, renewable
energy solutions. The solutions presented are also reducing greenhouse gases
from the households that benefits from the solutions. Emissions are reduced
with reduced coal use, reduced biomass use that reduces deforestation, and
with biogas plants that reduce methane emissions from manure. The activities
are earning greenhouse gas credits, but are struggling with the CDM rules.
Therefore simplified CDM for small projects is proposed and was discussed on
the event.
