This Green Paper was launched on November 13, 2008 by the EU Commission. It was launched as part of the Energy Security and Efficiency Package & Second Strategic Energy Review. It identifies 6 strategic initiatives as essential for the EU's energy security: a Baltic Interconnection Plan, a Mediterranean Energy Ring, adequate North-South gas and electricity interconnections with Central and South-East Europe, a North Sea Offshore Grid, a Southern Gas Corridor and effective liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies for Europe.

While we in INFORSE-Europe recognize that energy security is important, it must not be an excuse for state and EU support for new pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure in the EU.

See the Green Paper here at the EC website.

Public consultation ongoing until 31 March, 2009
